My Top 10 Books of 2009

OK, we all know that I read a bit. Yeah, yeah, I know that I should have been vacuuming during part of that time but…..the dog hair dodo birds will still be there later. Believe me they will.

Someone recently (Hi Lookleap) asked if I would rate the books that I read last year. I don’t list all the books that I read on the blog because I don’t want to overload the system and crash the internet…just kidding. But I do list some of my favorites. But I have to tell you, the thought of trying to whittle it down to the top 10 was a really difficult thing for me. But because I love you and because I am always up for a challenge (not that I am competitive because I am not) then I will give it the old college try.

These are in no particular order of liking just so that you know.

The African Queen by C.S.Forster
     - the book is fairly similar to the movie if you have seen that. But I still enjoyed the book.

The Four Feathers by A.E.W. Mason
     - this one had been on the shelf for a bit. I haven’t seen any of the movies based on this book  so I came at it without any preconceived notions. It is definitely “gung ho empire” but also has a great deal of love and atonement in it and I really enjoyed it.

Dear Exile by Hilary Liftin and Kate Montgomery
     - two college roomies separated for a year as one of them goes off to Africa to work with the Peace Corp. Funny and a good read

Dead Until Dark   by Charlaine Harris
     - This is the first of the “Sookie Stackhouse” books. I have to admit that I read through the whole series in about two weeks. They hooked me. But let me tell you something. So then I rented the “True Blood” series from HBO which is based on these books….I HATED it. Love the books HATE the series. Stick with the books.
     - just as an aside. I purchased the first book in the series but I looked until I found one that DID NOT have the tie in cover that goes with the series. I just have a thing about it.

Tears in the Darkness   by Michael Norman
     - deals with the Bataan Death March. You know me and my uplifting reading! It is was very good, hooked me right away and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

The Uncollected Wodehouse  by David Jansen
     - Ummm, who wouldn’t like P.G.Wodehouse. There isn’t anything that he has written that hasn’t been flat out funny. Jeeves and Wooster is just about the most sublime stuff.

Man of the Family  by Ralph Moody
     - this is the second book in the “Little Britches” series of books. They tell the story of Ralph and his family after they moved to Colorado in the early part of the 20th century. Just loved the writing and the story.

The Eaves of Heaven   by Andrew X. Pham
    - a family narrative about life in Vietnam between the years of 1940-1976.

Doctor to the Resistance  by Hal Vaughn
     - the story of an American doctor who was living and working in Paris before WWII and his help to the French Resistance.
