A Worthy Canine

I am without words. I only have tears that are spilling down my cheeks and dripping onto my keyboard. And all because of a crazy dog that I didn’t even want, who wormed his way into my life (after he stopped barking in his crate) and became an extension of my heart.

I knew I was sunk that day that they all said, “Can’t we just stop by Rescue Village and look at the cats and dogs? We won’t bring one home.” Famous last words. We went in, worked our way back to the puppies…..and there he was. The last of a litter of five puppies of uncertain parentage who had been left in the “No Questions Asked Dog Drop Door” four days before. He was fluffy and black with a skinny tail that had a weird puffball on the end. I think I might have weakly said, “No!?!” but it was of no use.

We came home with an 8 week old puppy. Rescue Village couldn’t even really tell us how big he was going to be……70 pounds it turned out. There wasn’t even anything at home to house or feed a puppy. The cats hated him on sight. And I can tell you that I was REALLY ready to return him after two days of crying all night in his crate. It took a bit of time but we figured each other out. I thought, “Oh, he is going to be so nice and quiet and sweet.”

That lasted about a week, until he got used to us, and then it was all crazy all the time.

Maxwell at 3 months

How could you not love a face like that. Really.

It quickly became apparent that we had acquired perhaps the smartest dog that I have ever know. He was just wicked smart. He house trained in two weeks. He trained to the invisible fence in no time. He didn’t even have to wear the collar, he knew where the line was and he didn’t cross it, even when confronted with a coveted squirrel. He put himself to bed at the stroke of 9PM. We would look around and find that he was already asleep in his crate.

He self punished.

No really. He was so wickedly smart that he knew, after he had done something, or perhaps even as he was planning, that he might as well just go into his crate cuz he was a NoNoBadDog. Most of the time he just took what he wasn’t supposed to eat/chew/have and destroyed it IN his crate and then waited for you to get home and discover what he had done.I'm so ashamedIMG_5593IMG_5886Max messPOD 1-6-07

He was always sorry……but it never stopped him. Until he was about 10 years old he was also quite likely to put his front paws on the counter and help himself to whatever might be in reach.

An entire stick of butter

Most of a pan of lasagna

Half of a cake

Cookies galore

A sandwich

5 pounds of turkey

Once his hind legs were no longer strong enough to go for the counter goodies he was a master at digging through the garbage the minute that we left the house, just to see if we had put something in there that might be delicious. Nothing was off limits, including tea bags and popcorn. He ate it all.

Max hated to be separated from his people. Where you were, that is where he wanted to be. If we were in the water at the cottage he would whine and bark until he could join us. If we went in the car, he wanted to go with. If I worked outside he needed to be there with me. If I was in the basement, he was in the basement. The only time that was not the case was when there were sports on the TV. He wanted to be with you, but he was so anxiety-ridden about sports that he would sit right at your feet and pant in terror….but he would sit there. We found, in the last year or so, that if we just told him to go to bed and then closed the laundry room door, he was fine. He just needed to be told that it was OK not to be by us.

Max also wasn’t all that thrilled about having his picture taken. I had to work at it. And work I did. His eyes would melt your soul but he just didn’t want you to know that.2014-02-27 14.02.012014-03-02 10.53.192014-03-29 09.53.08-22014-04-06 07.13.40-22014-05-11 10.43.53-22014-05-16 20.47.47-22014-06-07 18.58.30-22014-09-05 22.19.45-22014-11-02 14.24.25-22015-01-25 12.19.13-22015-04-23 06.38.00-22015-04-26 13.36.27-22015-05-01 20.07.56-12015-07-04 10.50.57-1

We have known that “This Day” was coming. Last winter was hard on Maxie Poodles. He had arthritis which made it difficult when the weather was cold. He could no longer sit, it was either stand up or lay down. When he would lay down he groaned and once he was down he liked to stay there for a bit as getting back up was a trial. He took to sleeping smack dab in the middle of the floor where you had to walk to get into the kitchen, just so he would be near us. He had a tumor of some kind growing on his belly. We knew it was there. Dr. Jeff and Dr. Jeremy knew it was there. We chose to just monitor it’s size (it was growing and the size of 1/2 a baseball). He had the whole Chryseomonas Luteola thing going on in his sinuses (there is a blog post about it somewhere but I just don’t have the heart to find it right now).

And then there was the incident in January where he had what Dr. Jeff felt was a bleed in his liver. That was very scary. Max was disoriented, he was vomiting, his abdomen was tender. I thought that I was taking him to the vet to have to make this decision that day. Dr. Jeff felt that he could treat Max symptomatically with some steroids and he was right. 48 hours later Max was much better. But he wasn’t as better as he had been before. We could see that we were on a slow slide downward. He slept more. He occasionally turned his nose up at food. He had “gastro-intestinal issues” that we don’t need to discuss here. Yesterday he was restless and would not be denied going out with me while I cut down my hydrangeas. He wanted to be right by my side all the time. This morning when I took him out he seemed a bit slow but not out of the realm of the usual. But when Dan and I got back from the Community Center something definitely wasn’t right. We had only been gone an hour but in that hour he had undergone a change. He wasn’t interested in food. He was restless and couldn’t get comfortable. He had been sick, not once, not twice but three times in the living room. I discovered that when I stepped in it. I took him out and he was sick again in the grass and then didn’t seem to have the energy to walk back to the house.

He wasn’t good.

We called and Dr. Jeff kindly worked us into his busy Friday morning. The news was not good. He was running a fever  and his blood work was whacky in some places and fine in others. His blood counts weren’t good. Dr. Jeff thought it might be a number of things, all of which sounded terrible and, none of which could be definitively diagnosed without putting Max through rigorous tests that we were not prepared to do to him. He might respond to some fluids, some antibiotics and some other medications. He might not. We would have had to board him at the vet hospital kennel for the next week as HHBL and I are going to be out of town. Dr. Jeff wasn’t optimistic. In the end HHBL and I felt that what would break our hearts even more that putting Max down today would be to have him make no progress over the next few days and then have to make that decision without us being at his side to hold him and say goodbye.

We chose today.

The people at the Twinsburg Veterinary Hospital were the soul of kindness and caring. We were able to spend as much time with Max as we needed both before and after. We wept as much as was needed. I spent some time just putting my face in Max’s fur and smelling, trying to imprint on my brain and heart the unique smell of my most wonderful dog. When all was done he was laying as if he was asleep, in one of his favorite positions, no more pain. For once in my life, I couldn’t take a picture. I tried. I really tried. But I just couldn’t do it. 2015-10-23 11.18.38

I chose to remember his crazy Hobbit feet.

Oh my Max the Magnificent. You were a worthy canine and there will never be another one like you. I would give up clean floors and no poop patrol just to be able to have you here for a bit more time.

I Am So Not Picking That Up

2015-05-01 20.07.56-1

Oh the life as the owner of an elderly dog. You just never know what is going to come up…or out any given moment. Max the Magnificent is doing alright overall considering he is going to be 14 years old next month. He doesn’t run around any longer like he used to. He doesn’t hear me when I yell at call him. He sleeps more than he doesn’t sleep. But overall, OK.

That is until Sunday afternoon.

Don’t worry Christiane, it isn’t THAT time yet.

Back to my ramblings. Sunday morning MtM was fine. He scarfed his food and dutifully went out to do his business. No issues. HHBL fed and walked him at lunch. No real issues. And then came the afternoon.

We try to relax on Sunday afternoons. HHBL and I were both sitting in our “chairs” in the living room, reading, when we were enveloped by a cloud of noxious fumes so violently bad that it left us stunned.

What the every lovin’ HECK was that and where did it come from?

It wasn’t HHBL and it wasn’t me. We take pride in our “work” on that score and most certainly would have taken credit for so fine and deadly an emanation. That just left MtM. As we turned to look at him….

He lay there and audibly pooted, just like a little elderly lady walking up the stairs.

Poot. Poooooooooooooot!

Cough! Gag! Fanning face and gasping into shirt. That is just awful! Thank goodness MtM was over by HHBL so I didn’t get the full brunt of it. Mother of all that is Holy and GOOD! We chalked it up to reserve nervousness from the thunder storms that had rolled through the day before. MtM sometimes displays his anxiety in intestinal ways. Don’t make me explain that.

And then the REAL fun began. HHBL went downstairs to walk on the treadmill and I stayed right where I was, butt planted in chair, that is until MtM started giving me urgent, “I have to go out NOW” signals. Sigh. Fine! I will take you for a short walk only.

Yeah, it was short….but VERY productive. As we all know, I don’t shy away from talking about gross things (and you people here don’t know the HALF of it,) but you can thank me now for not describing to you what came out of my dog. Just know that, despite the rigid “clean up after your pooch” rule that exists in my little neighborhood, I wasn’t about to try and corral that runny pile of awesomeness. I just tried to hustle MtM back into the house all the time hoping that the neighbors hadn’t seen my non-use of the plastic bag in my hand. We were waylaid by Daisy the Barky Papillon who lives next door and wanted to exchange courtesy sniffs as she went out and MtM went in. Daisy I REALLY don’t think you want to put your nose in that general area. Really I don’t.

And so it went for the rest of Sunday, and Monday. That poor dog even asked to go out at 12:30a!! He hasn’t done that since he was a puppy. There is nothing creepier or lonelier than standing out on the patio in your pj’s, a shawl and crocs while your dog is off in the gloomy distance hunkering again and again. Then this morning he was barking to go out at 5:30a. He never barks to go out in the morning. He just waits patiently for you to come and feed him. To top it all off……he didn’t eat his breakfast. Then we knew he was really sick.

So finally today we had him in to see Dr. Jeremy, who really aught to get extra battle pay for having to do a rectal exam on a dog with persistent projectile poopage.

The long and the sort of it is…..

Gastritis (yeah, we knew about the gas part), which many younger dogs can handle and heal on their own. It is a problem with older dogs who just don’t have as good recovery skills. MtM now has to take 6 days worth of Flagyl and eat a bland diet of cooked ground chicken and rice.

Yes, I cooked my dog a meal of ground chicken and rice. He is going to feel so spoiled.

But he can’t drink alcohol when taking Flagyl. I guess I will just have to drink his for him.

The things I do for my dog.

Fabulous Scarf

Alpha, stop taking pictures and let me in! There are treats waiting and possibly crumbles on the floor. I have things to do and people to annoy.

And don't I look fabulous in my scarf? I am stylin'.

The Football Faces of Max the Magnificent

We have a 75 pound dog that is a complete and utter woosiepants when it comes to sports.

Complete and utter.

The minute that you turn on the TV and dial up a sporting event like football…or basketball….or baseball…or soccer, he goes into his “Oh man it’s sports and I am so scared because there might be yelling” mode. That mode means that he must be physically by you for the entire time, even if you are not actually IN the room where the sporting event is going on. That entails slinking into the room and laying right at our feet or better yet in between our feet in the “bend” of the u-shaped couch. He in not content with just being with us, secure in the safety that we provide. He then has to stare at us and even better….breath on us….with breath that is reminiscent of three week old fish mixed with whatever foul thing that you can think of. We call it his nervous sports breath. It is gag worthy.

And when there is yelling at the TV, HHBL and I are both boisterous fans when rooting for our particular teams (Go Ohio State, Sic’em Bears), then he stands up and looks extra hard at us, then lays down, then stands up. And if you get up off the couch to do something quickly it is not uncommon to turn around and trip over Mr. Woosiepants because he has also gotten up and is standing directly behind you. If he could climb into your sweater and cower in shivering fear I am sure that he would do so.

A Gratuitous Picture of the Dog

All you get today for NaBloPoMo is a gratuitous picture of Max the Magnificent. At the moment that I took the picture he was begging me to get HHBL to stop yelling at the TV. The Cleveland Browns were on and any sort of sports of the TV just sends Max into paroxisms of canine angst.

No seriously. The dog could use a big dose of valium on Sunday afternoons during NFL season....and during NBA season.....and during MBL season.....

He drives us absolutely bonkers with trying to be a close as doggily possible to us, and panting and groaning when voices are raised at the TV. I am sure that he is mentally wringing his doggie hands every time voices are raised.

I Rolled the Flea Dice….and Lost

This summer has been, well, just plain old busy.

And I threw the flea dice……

And lost.

One would think, after THIS incident, that I would never go another summer without making sure that Max the Magnificent was covered as far as flea protection was concerned. Never again do I want to have to vacuum my dog’s genitals in an effort to combat fleas.

IMG_9113A

Alpha that was a very scary thing! I do not like the vacuum.

And yet, even after that traumatic incident, I did forget. Or more to the point I just kept putting it off…..like forever. We live in a small development in the middle of a town and Max doesn’t hang around in the grass all that much. I figured we were safe.

Oh FINE! And I didn’t really want to spend $70 for flea medication. So sue me.

But I didn’t figure on the kennel.

We didn’t realize it quite at first. Fleas are like that. They lull you into a false sense of flealess security before making your life, and the life of your dog, a misery. We picked Max up from the kennel last Thursday, after our quick trip to Washington, DC. All was fine. He was wiped out like he always is. All that playing and barking is tough work. But he was a bit restless as well. I dismissed it.

Fast forward to Sunday. HHBL and I are enjoying Sunday brunch out on the patio. It is a beautiful day, sunshine, breezy. All is right with the world……except for the dog. It was HHBL who actually picked up on the fact that Max seemed to be scratching more than normal.

HHBL: I think that dog has fleas!

Me: No he doesn’t!

HHBL: I think he does.

Me: FINE! I will check him which is such a fun job. (insert calling Max over and making him lie down and roll over a bit so that I can intimately inspect his genitals) See, he doesn’t have……oh shoot!

Sure I said Oh shoot. What do you THINK I said?

The upshot of all of this was….yesterday I spent $70 on flea medication.

And now I have to find the time to figure out how to get the cover off of his memory foam dog bed so that I can wash it.

Yes, my dog has a memory foam dog bed.

I never was a good gambler.

The Great Dark Meat Turkey Caper

Thanksgiving day Pilot man produced a glorious, deep fried to perfection, turkey. It was a thing of beauty and a joy to behold. That is until we stood around and stripped it of all it’s deep fried turkey skin.

Oh my stars and garters deep fried carcinogens never tasted so good.

Over the course of the afternoon we all ate our fill of the bird…and the stuffing…and the mac n cheese….and the Onions Mornay….Party Potatoes…..salad. My waistline is expanding just thinking about it. All delicious and highly carbohydrate and fat centric. Just like Thanksgiving should be. But finally we were done overeating. And as we usually do in my family, we picked the turkey off the bone (well, Mimi actually did this) and put all the meat, neatly separated into light and dark, into plastic zip bags and temporarily stored on a blanket on the floor in the garage. It stays quite chilly in there despite the heater and therefore is a perfect place to store food items that will eventually be consumed but cannot currently inhabit a refrigerator that is already bulging.

And then we went about out business. We collapsed in a turkey induced coma for the rest of the day. We drank more wine and local, Chicago craft brews. Oh did we have excellent craft brews. My favorite happened to be Finch Brewing’s Fascist Pig Ale. It helps that my niece, Arin, is training to be a Cicerone (a beer expert). She knows her beer. The owner of said brewery is a friend. It is good to have friends like that. My cousin, John, also brews beer. Delicious beer.

Where was I going with this story?

Oh yes.

SO, Friday we actually went out to dinner. The local gyros place, The Smokehouse, was calling our name with a fierce intensity that could not be denied. Oh it was  good. So, so good. So garlicky and lamby and……

I digress again.

What I wanted to say is that we did not consume any turkey on Friday. So imagine the surprise, consternation and general shaking of heads when it was time to prepare traveling lunches for Saturday and we discovered……

The bag of dark turkey meat had been ripped open and, other than one little piece that was wedged in a corner, had been totally consumed.

What the HECK! Could a raccoon have done this? The damage was too great for a mouse or even an army of mice.

And so the blame fell on…..

Wrigley

Wrigley the Rambunctious Labradoodle. Wrigs is owned by my aforementioned niece. He is bigger than Max, has more energy than Max, is younger than Max and, when confronted with a bowl full of cat food (my nephew Austin also brought along his cat Chinese Food) cannot be swayed from consuming the entire bowl of kitty nibbles (Sorry Jana, I said the word nibble).

Of course it would HAVE to be Wrigley that had done the dirty turkey deed. Max would NEVER do that.

IMG_5771

No I wouldn’t, Alpha, and I am disgusted that you would even contemplate such a thing.

And so we blamed Wrigley. He had gone back to the Windy City and wasn’t there to defend himself. I was self righteous in my condemnation. I was steadfast in my denunciation.

So, when Max started acting rather odd on Friday night, I didn’t really think about it. He was constantly wanting to go out and then stay out for long periods of time. That is not usually his pattern. He goes out, makes a circuit of the yard, leaves a peemail for the dog next door and then comes back in. Well unless there are “bigger” issues to attend to. But Friday night it was all yard all evening long. And after we “put him to bed” in the basement he kept barking as if he wanted to go out. Finally I just told him to cut it out and go to sleep.

Saturday morning we were up and out the door early, heading for home. Max was a bit sluggish and acting odd but we had things to do and home to get to and we just chalked his “mood” up to having to run around with Wrigley for several days, so I didn’t really think about it.

And then he started the farting in the car. Folks, HHBL drives a Prius. It is a small car. And Max is a big dog. You get the picture.

I began to wonder about that absent turkey.

THEN, when I walked Max at one of our stops, he actually did a “dukie”. Please tell me that I don’t have to explain what I mean by that. Just know that it the twelve years that we have been traveling with Max he has never, not ONCE, done a dukie in a foreign dog walk. It just doesn’t happen.

Until Saturday.

But the final coup de grace was when Mimi called Saturday evening to ask if Max was feeling all right. She wondered because when she had gone downstairs to the room where Max stays………she had found that he had dukied in a number of spot.

Folks, Max hasn’t had an indoor accident since he was 10 weeks old. He prides himself on that.

And then I knew….

Without a doubt…..

IMG_5770a

Turkey Thief

Wrigley, Aunt Debbie owes you a big fat apology and a chew toy. You are a good boy. You wouldn’t ever think about eating an entire bag of turkey.

IMG_5772

Did someone say turkey? I LOVE turkey.
