Have you ever had one of those days. You know the kind, the ones that start out good, full of promise and energy and the thought that you are going to accomplish something excellent.
Yeah, one of those kind of days.
And then, like the Titanic and that iceberg, things just went to heck and a hand basket really quickly.
That was yesterday.
Oh it started out fine and dandy, well except for the fact that I have this niggling sense in the back of my throat and nose that I am getting a cold. I can think myself out of it I am sure. The power of positive thinking and all.
Had a great walk with my walking buddies. It was a tad windy but then so are we....in the talking sense NOT in the other sense. Sheesh!
Did some knitting in the morning on a gift that I can't talk about yet because the person that it is for reads the blog. No mom, it isn't you. The thing that I am knitting I have never knit before and it is turning out SOOOOOOO cute and that is all because of TriCounty Knitaholics and their encouragement. Thanks guys!
Then I made bread and it turned out excellent. I love making yeast bread and since I got over my fear of yeast, the kind that you put in bread NOT the other kind! Man guys, stop thinking the potty thoughts. At any rate, the bread turned out great and I wish that I had a picture of it and it's awesomeness but I don't. I ate some of it though and it was delicious.
Then I made chicken soup because I was taking a "new baby" meal to my friend Hope who just had a baby last week. I make really excellent chicken soup if I do say so myself.
Then I knit some more and did some work for the office and things were great
And then.......
Life disintegrated, went down hill, took a fast train to badness, the dukies hit the fan. You get the picture.
I needed to take the soup out of the pot because it had cooled. So I dumped it into a big ziploc bag which is what I always do. I sealed the bag up and put it on the counter to await taking to Hope's house. Then I started on the dessert. I was going to make these yummy little apple tarts that are just cut up apples that are put into pie crust and baked. They are yummy.
I made the pie crust dough, an oil crust that I have been making ever since Grandma Pringle showed me how. I can make that stuff in my sleep. Or at least I could until yesterday when I managed to put too much oil in it. Which necessitated putting more flour in it and mushing it all around. It wasn't quite the right consistency but it would do. I put that bowl to the side so that the pie crust could sit and went on to peeling the apples.
No problem with the apples, they practically peeled and chopped themselves. Sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in. Stir. Ready to fill.
Go to move the ziploc bag of chicken soup that is sort of in the way and sitting where I want to roll out my pie dough. Pick up the bag and realize......
There.Is.A.Hole.In.The.Bag.
The bag has been sitting on the counter long enough to lose about half of it's liquid contents. Slowly dribbling onto the counter in a stealthy manner. Under all of my flour/sugar/salt canisters. Under my mixer. Under my food processor. Around the corner and out to the street.
OK, not really on that last part but it felt like it. I said a bad word. But not a REALLY bad one.
I pick up the bag, dribbling more onto the floor and I put the bag into the mixing bowls that always sit on the counter. I grab a bunch of towels to sop up the mess. I am making good progress when I realize that most likely I will need to clean the underside of the mixer and the food processor. Now, if I had been thinking properly and hadn't been in a hurry I might have made some different decisions at this point. I have a big Kitchen Aide mixer with several bowls. It is awesome but it is heavy. What I SHOULD have done is take the bowls off the mixer and then carefully, holding it firmly, turn it over and wipe the underside. But I didn't do that. I just grabbed a hold of the thing and tilted it away from me, thinking that I would just quickly swipe the bottom and put it back upright.
Only my hands were wet....and the mixer was really heavy......and it sort of slipped a little and tipped over sideways and just hung there suspended so that I would have plenty of time to see the disaster that was going to happen but that I wouldn't be able to stop.
The mixer tipped over......and landed on top of all the mixing bowls......the same mixing bowls that held the bag of soup that was leaking......and then it knocked the bowls over spilling the soup that had collected in the bowl all over the counter......and also in the process knocking the butter dish off of the counter onto the floor, upside down of course, but the butter had already flown out of it and landed on another part of the floor....and shot the measuring spoons over by the kitchen table....and scared the dog. Oh, and the soup that splashed and spilled, spilled INTO the bowl that had the pie crust waiting to be used. Rendering it unusable.
Have you ever played the game Mouse Trap? You know the one where the marble goes down the chute and makes something else go and then something else happens. It was like that, only I didn't win anything at the end.
And then I said another bad word. Actually I said a series of bad words. I hang my head in shame. It was at about this time that Max, even though he was hovering in the kitchen hoping that I didn't see the big glob of butter on the floor that he might have a chance of eating and the chicken soup that was slowly dripping onto the floor, Max decided that it was time to go and sit in his house where I am sure that he felt safer.
I just had to stand there for a second and take it all in. And for once I didn't take a picture because I just didn't want to remember this in years to come.
I cleaned up the kitchen, threw the pie dough away, decided to make apple crisp which seemed much safer at the moment, defrosted more chicken stock to replace the stuff that had run all over the counter, got things in semi order. And then I retreated from the kitchen because it was obviously not a safe place for me to be.
Some days are just like that.

Nigeria is Calling Me
Do you have more than one email address? I do. I have my regular email address that I give to people that I really like. I have a "junk" email address that I give to all the companies that I don't like. And I have an email for work.
It is the "junk" email that brings me humor on a daily basis.
business phone systems - have one of those already
vitamins and minerals
Dish Network wants to lure me away from my horrible cable provider,
the perfect job for me
a medical degree - if I had known it was THAT easy I might have skipped nursing school
whiter teeth
Dr. Ignatius Imala, Director of the Visa Debt Card Dept., Central Bank of Nigeria has been trying to notify my about my inheritance/contract payment. He wants me to know that my $10.5 million dollars has been approved to be made to me through a corporate Visa ATM. I just need to call and give them my full name, address and phone and they will quickly process it for me.
I will get right on that.
It is the "junk" email that brings me humor on a daily basis.
- Paul is trying desperately to get a hold of me because my auto warranty is about to expire. That is news to me and to Subaru
- There are a number of people who I have never heard of who want to "friend" me on Facebook, despite the fact that this isn't the email that Facebook uses.
- 2hot2handle and freakynymph are feeling frisky and wants me to know that
- Various people want to sell me things like:

- I could sign up for an "adult dating service" - the mind boggles at what this might actually be and it might not sit well with HHBL
- Someone is kindly trying to give me an iphone. I just haven't let them know where to send it and if I would just click on that convenient link then they can get all my info. Hmmmmm
- Some sort of "doctor" is telling me that he is responding to my interest in earning an extra $300-500 PER DAY with absolutely NO COST to me!

A Family Letter
HHBL's family has a really awesome tradition that has been in existence for, I think, over 70 years now. They have a "revolving family letter".
What is a revolving letter you might ask. You were asking that I know so I will explain it to you as I know the story. Around 70 years ago (give or take a year) there were 5 siblings (one of whom was my father-in-law's father) who wanted to keep closer contact with each other as they didn't all live in close proximity. So they decided that they would start what has come to be known as "The Family Letter".
This is how the whole system works.
- the letter arrives at your house.
- the installment that you wrote is on the top of the stack of letters. You take that off and throw it out after re-reading what you wrote the last time.
- you read through all the other letters from the participants
- you write your next installment and put in on the bottom of the pile. If there are any pictures that you want to add then do that.
- you send the "letter" on to the next participant whose last letter should now be on top of the pile.
Simple!
But this is such a cool idea I can tell you. There are currently 16 families participating in the revolving letter. We have children and grandchildren of the original founders, relatives by marriage who carry on when the spouse dies. It is open to all. The letter travels to places like Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Arizona, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, New York, Georgia and places in between.
Ideally the letter would come to you every 6 months but that doesn't always happen. Sometimes people aren't overly quick on writing their updates and mailing the letter on. Things happen, the letter gets stuck in a pile of other things. Not that this has ever happened at our house mind you. No siree, I hop right on that letter and get it done. Like lightning. Swiftly. Without delay. Uh huh, sure.
Some people produce their letters on the computer, some write by hand, some type them up the old fashioned way...on a typewriter! We may pull John into the modern age some day......or maybe not.
The WORST words in the world to hear are, "I think that the Family Letter has been lost." That small phrase strikes fear in the hearts of all of us because then you have to resurrect the letter as best as you can. There is someone who has the master "send to" list thank goodness but it is a major disaster. Thankfully it has only happened once in the time that we have been participating and it wasn't me who did it.
It isn't that we don't see each other on a regular basis because we do, we just don't see everybody. I saw most of the people in the family in June when we were all together in Park City but some were not able to come and so this is the way that we know that Paul and Beth's kids are growing up, that Margaret has died but that hopefully her son might take her place in the letter chain, that Chris and Jeff's kids are all out of the house now and branching out into the world. That Bunt and Anne are still enjoying life in Hawaii (who wouldn't!).
Now, it has showed up at our house again and it is time to sit down and write our installment. HHBL had always allowed me to be the letter writer in the family and for that I am very grateful. This letter has been a way to get to know some of his more far flung relatives. When we meet up every other year there is always someone who goes, "Oh! You are the Ohio branch of the family. I know what is happening because I have read The Family Letter."
I just love The Family Letter.

Where Have All My Words Gone?
I have to honest and say, I have run out of words for some reason. Do you ever have those times? Now I know that it is hard to believe that I would be without words but sometimes it just happens. I sit down at the old computer to tell you guys wonderful things and.......
Nothing
Nada
Zilcho
Zippo
I look at my ever increasing list of things that I want to blog about and nothing strikes me.
It is sort of like knowing that you are hungry, going to the frig, opening it up and just standing there because you can't decide what you want to eat. Nothing appeals to you.
Left overs? No.
Apple? No.
Glass of milk? No.
Bowl of ice cream? No........ did you really believe that I would say no to ice cream? You are crazy!
OK, now that I have gotten this rambling post out of my system I am sure that I will be back in the blogging track. I really do have a whole big line up of posts that are about ready to go. Do you do that when you blog? Do you work on multiple posts? I try to but sometimes they just don't come together when I want them to, need them to.
Whine, whine, whine.
I am done now.

Lite Posting Today
Hi all-
It sounds like I am writing you a letter. Posting will be lite (you could interpret that as non-existent) as HHBL and I will be attending a wedding. Andrew and Kendall are the cutest couple, so eager, so in love. We were their pre-marital mentors in the mentoring program at church and so they very kindly invited us to the wedding.
Oh goody, a chance to get dressed up and actually put on high heels. Actually, if I could get away with it I would have on jeans and a tee shirt and hand made socks.
Speaking of jeans, I got TWO pair of Levi's, practically new, at the thrift shop yesterday for$3 a piece. They are in the wash at the moment and I am so excited.
OK, off to put on high heels.

7 Quick Takes (Vol 41)
The weeks just keep coming around and around and around. I think I feel dizzy.-1-
Do you know what one of the benefits of being an "empty nester" is.....I am finally, after so many years that I lost count, finally caught up on the laundry. I don't know what to say, I really don't. I didn't think this day would ever happen. I just assumed that there would always be piles of it hanging around and multiplying, like fungus (and some of it may have been covered with fungus).
But, I walked into my laundry room the other day and realized....there was no laundry that needed to be done. I stood there for a moment and contemplated that. Just think about it for a moment.
No.....Laundry......That.....Needs......To.....Be........Done.
Joy!

Sometimes technology is the most amazing thing...and sometimes not. First the amazing.
I was able this week to have a nice long "Facebook chat" with The Engaged One. Me sitting at my computer here in the frozen north in Ohio and she sitting in her dorm room in Uganda. Really, that is just the most amazing thing. I was typing away and all of a sudden it just hit me that she was almost half a world away and 7 hours ahead in time. I have to say that being able to occasionally chat with her whether via Facebook, email or actually talking on the phone makes the worries that we have about her being so far away somewhat lessened. Yes we worry but she is the Lord's and His to protect. I just keep saying, "Worry solves nothing, worry solves nothing..." and sometimes I acutally believe that.
Now for the not so amazing. This month has brought the random "technology failures" that make life crazy some times. For three Fridays in a row we had our internet/cable go out on Friday. Just BLINK and then nothing, snow, a screen that is as blank as my brain after 9p. You call the cable company and a lower eschelon drone, who has no power or information whatsoever, tells you that they can probably get someone out there on Monday. MONDAY, are you joking. You are joking right because I work from home sometimes and I can't work if I don't have internet access. Every time it eventualy got fixed but usually it was at least 24 hours later. Grrrrr.
Then yesterday it wasn't the cable that went out but the phone. That isn't as much of a problem because we don't get too many calls on the land line, we use our cell phones. But it was just one more technology glitch. Thankfully "Jim" fixed it within 24 hours, and it wasn't inside the house so I didn't have to pay for it. Well, except in the continuing graying of my hair as I constantly picked up the phone to see if the dial tone had spontaneously come back.

I don't mean to be picky, I really don't. (Cartoon Girl stop laughing!) But if you are having a wedding present wrapped, and you wait for a rather long time for the sales girl to come back with the gift all wrapped up nicely, and even if the wrapping service is free, you do not expect that the gift will be wrapped in what I can only describe as a printed garbage bag like thing with a purple (purple?!?) bow attached and the top of the bag hacked off haphazardly and TAPE slapped onto the bottom of the gift. She handed it back to me, all smiles and, "Hey look at the beautiful job I did!" and I just didn't know what to say. What I WANTED to say but didn't was, "You have GOT to be kidding. Get back in there and do a good job on this thing!" But I held my tongue and just figured that I will have to go and get something else to wrap this up in for the wedding we are going to on Saturday. I like Kendall and Andrew too much to put that monstrosity of a gift wrapping job on the gift table.

I had to turn on the heat this week and that is just wrong. But my toes were cold and we had a house guest and I relented. But I am hoping that the weather will warm up a bit and that I can turn the furnaces back off for at least a few more days. I hope, I hope.....

Next week begins my least favorite part of gardening....the dreaded Fall clean up. This year I have determined that I am starting early, when there will be, perhaps, some warm days. There have been years when I had on hat, gloves, and winter gear and the snow was swirling as I was cutting back the last of the hosta and rudbekia. Tomorrow it begins. Unless of course it is raining and then I am not going out in that.
The job is one that I don't like but it is one of those things where, when you are done then you can heave a great big sigh of relief because it is done and all the beds look nice and neat. The other thing is that it makes it a whole lot easier to blow all of the leave that fall from the trees. Believe me we have A LOT of leaves that fall. Anything that makes that job easier I am all for. Although I really do love my leaf blower and how I can be all obsessive about blowing the leaves. I know, it is an issue.

I have noticed an interesting corollary. The more I blog the less I journal. I don't like that and I am taking measure to stop the slow slide into non-journaling. Journaling is a habit, just like brushing my teeth and I slipped in that habit. So, I am "re-sensitiving" myself to journaling every day but it has, sometimes me hard going. Do you think that each person only has so many words in them for any given day and that I spend them on you guys and then there are no more for my poor journal? I hope that isn't the case. My journal has been a life saver to me over the years. It is a place where I can be an "open book" and we all need a place like that.

I took the time to drive by my old house yesterday. It was sort of on the way back from the Subaru dealership (where Coco was having some maintainence work done) so I figured that I would swing by. It was a great house and we lived there for 10 years.
She is looking a little "worn" around the edges I think but then she was built in 1937. I miss her in a way but wouldn't go back that is for sure. And boy have the trees in the front yard gotten huge in the last 10 years. Hmmmm, maybe I should do a post on "houses I have known". What do you think?
Bye for now, have a great week if I only see you once a week. Do something fun and enjoy yourself cuz life is just too short to always be crabby. I think that is going to be my new motto, not that I am crabby all that much. The hysterectomy took care of that little problem.

The Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth
It must be the fault of that glowing orb in the sky, that bringer of brightness, that thing that Icarus flew to close to (thought I would throw that little piece of mythology in there)....the sun. I was dazzled by the appearance today of that thing we have seen so little of and when I sat down to write, to blog, to muse....there was nothing. Nada. Zilcho. Zip. A big empty space where thoughts should be.
Oh what to do, what to do.
And then, like a ray of light, like a knightess in shining armor, Dandy from Spontaneous Clapping came to my rescue and tickled me pink all at the same time.
Just as an aside, can you be tickled pink? It sounds painful and I would rather not have it happen to me. But the phrase popped up in my brain, ran down my arms and out the ends of my fingers and onto the screen where it refuses to leave, despite repeated attempts to delete.
Now back to our regularly scheduled post. So, Dandy awarded me this......
An "Honest Scrap" award (who thinks up these things?). I must tell you ten honest things about myself. No fudging, no tall tales. Just honesty until it hurts and I beg for mercy. Don't say that you haven't been warned. And if you make it all the way to the end then I will award this to 9 other blogs who I love and read every day. I wouldn't lie to YOU, only to myself. That is why the next few minutes are going to be so painful.
And away we go....
1. I absolutely LOATH anything with a banana flavoring. I cannot stress that enough people, loath is not too strong a word for it. I can make it through one banana if it is just at a particular ripeness but barely. I attribute this banana aversion to the fact that while in nursing school some of us had the bright idea to go on the "egg/hot dog/banana diet" which meant that the first day you ate only 9 eggs, the second day only 9 hot dogs and the third day only 9 bananas. Then the fourth day you died from either high cholesterol, preservative poisoning or abnormally high levels of potassium and didn't need to worry about dieting anymore. And you can't stand bananas after that. Of course, this does not apply to any types of banana bread. Those I love.
2. Organizing things makes my heart sing like Maria Von Tropp on the mountain top (hey that rhymes!). You want to make me happy then present me with a room that needs to be organized and I am your woman.
3. I can wiggle my ears. It comes in very handy when you have to name something that no one else knows about you. Don't tell anyone because then I wouldn't be able to pull them out at parties and astound my friends.
4. I am totally bored with the thought of taking a vacation of any length at a resort. Crazy I know but I will be bored after about two days. HHBL and I take.....different kinds of vacations. Where some people go to Cancun or the Bahamas....we go to Ghana or India or Peru or Australia or Israel. And when we are there we are doing things like visiting microfinance groups in the slums or taking overnite train trips where we are the only non-hindi speaking individuals on a train that has 3000 people on it. Or perhaps crossing swaying rope bridges 200 feet above the forest floor. What can I say, we are just not "resort people".
5. I love to get in bed at 9p and watch TV or read. Don't call me after 10p cuz I will be asleep.
6. I am extremely afraid of snakes. My nephew showed me how he feeds his boa and I will NEVER be the same. Thanks Austin.
7. I know all the dialouge from the movie "The Hunt For Red October". Oh I love that movie. Oh I love Sean Connery. Alec Baldwin, ehhhhhh not so much.
8. I cannot spell worth a darn. If no one had ever invented spell check I would be doomed to a life of misspelled words and incomprehensible posting that no one could read. I also love commas way too much. We are destined to be together for all time.
9. I have a great fear of swimming in the ocean. Darn you "Jaws" for freaking me out so much in 1975 that if I can't see what is under my feet I am not going out there. What makes this even wierder is that I love to snorkle. Go figure.
Now I am passing this along to 9 of my favorite bloggers. You can participate or not as the mood strikes you but just remember that honesty is good for what ails you.

Come Sit By My Fire
