Semi-Wordless Wednesday

THOP Retreat2

Are you wondering why half of my forehead is scrapped away?

And why I have a slightly glazed look in my eyes. Well, more glazed than I usually do at any rate.

It is because this picture was taken about 3 hours after I sustained my one and hopefully ONLY concussion. Winter youth group retreat that involved tubing down a snowy hill. Good friend Keith and I thought it would be an excellent idea to go down the hill together on the inner tube. What more could happen other than a fast ride down a snowy hill.

Oh how wrong could I be.

You know those memories that are etched into your mind for all time? This is one of those. We mounted our rubber steed, launched ourselves down the hill…..and hit a bump part way down. Keith went up in the air, I went partly through the middle of the inner tube and Keith came down on my head and we slid the rest of the way down the hill. It felt like someone had rearranged my head into many little pieces as well as taking off a fair chunk of skin.  And I think it is so vivid because AFTER it happened I really don’t remember any of the rest of the retreat other than the fact that I had the worst head ache that I have ever had in my life, and I have had some REALLY bad headaches. I didn’t sleep that night, I just wandered quietly around the room and tried to unscramble my brains. And they were scrambled.

If this same injury happened now I think they would take me to the hospital. But this was…..a long time ago. Never you MIND how many years ago. They made sure that I was conscious and not bleeding profusely and then sent me off to have more fun.

Those were the good old days.

  1. I remember that retreat and also sustained a concussion from inter-tubing. I had a headache for days! So much fun - those were the good old days!

    1. Oh they were fun weren't they. And I am surprised that we didn't sustain more damage on those trips as well as all the inner-tubing that we did at the lake. Children are fairly resilient evidently.
