Breakfast Pizza

You can blame it all on Market Day because that is where my love affair with Breakfast Pizzas began. That is where I developed a craving for them.

And when we stopped ordering from Market Day I was bereft. I was downtrodden.

I was going through Breakfast Pizza withdrawal and it wasn’t pretty.

And then the little old light bulb went on in my cranium. I knew that I had to find another source, another conduit. I needed Breakfast Pizza. And so I decided that if Market Day can make them then so can I!

(Cue triumphant music)

And so here is a full color, picture packed tutorial for making Breakfast Pizza. And you don’t even have to eat it in the morning.

IMG_5417A These are all the ingredients that you will need. Not too many so don’t panic (not that you would or anything).

Start by turning on the oven to 450F. If you have a pizza baking stone you can heat it up in the oven at this time. Just let the oven get nice and scorching hot while you get everything ready.

IMG_5414 First there is a package of breakfast sausage. I realized that I had forgotten to take a picture of it until after I had it browning. Oops. You can use regular breakfast sausage or if you want to add some spice to your life then use the hot sausage.

IMG_5418 Brown your sausage in a skillet, breaking it up into small chunks. Don’t leave them too big. When the sausage is browned drain it on some paper towel. And make sure that the dog can’t get to it.

IMG_5420A Then there are the eggs. I have four eggs on the plate but I actually used six eggs. Six eggs, scrambled, are enough for two pizzas. I will explain in a minute. And just as an aside, I love brown eggs. They just make me happy. Not as happy as the blue and green eggs that my sis-in-laws chickens produce. Now those are gorgeous.

IMG_5429 Now it is time to scramble the eggs. Just remember that when you are scrambling the eggs that you treat them gently, as Julia Child would, and don’t add any liquid to them. They need to be soft but dry when you are done with them.

IMG_5423While the eggs are scrambling go ahead and grate the mozzarella cheese. Yum, cheese.

IMG_5425A  This is my happy cheese bowl. The Engaged One made this years ago and it is one of my favorites. There is a substantial crack in it but it is still “cheese worthy”. It is good to have traditions.

IMG_5426A Now get out your pizza peel. Don’t have one? No problem, just use a baking sheet. It comes out fine either way, I just like to use the peel. It makes me feel so, oh I don’t know, so masterful.

Then it is time to roll out the pizza dough. I will tell you that I use different pizza doughs for this recipe. If you want to buy already prepared dough then that is hunky dory with me. In this instance I was using some olive oil bread dough that I had in the frig. The recipe is from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, which is the most amazing book.

IMG_5427 So roll out your dough and put it on your pizza peel that you have dusted with corn meal or flour so that the dough doesn’t stick.

IMG_5434A Put half of the scrambled eggs on to the rolled out dough. Top with half of the sausage. Looking good!

And then

the train came off of my Breakfast Pizza track……

As is my usual practice when I am making any kind of pizza, after the addition of ingredients to the dough I shake the pizza peel back and forth to make sure that the dough moves easily around because I want to be able to slide it onto the pizza stone that is heating in the oven.

Shake…..nothing happens.

Shake, shake…..nada.

And then I realized that…..I hadn’t put any cornmeal on the peel before putting down the dough.

Dog turds!

IMG_5436 Notice that I have now transferred the dough to a regular baking sheet. I have also sprinkled half of the bacon pieces over the eggs and sausage. Yum!! Sausage AND bacon. What could be better.

What you can’t see is that I forgot to spray the sheet with non-stick spray before making the transfer.

Double dog turds!

I lifted up the edges of the pizza and sprayed under it.

Sprinkle the top of the pizza with half of the shredded cheese. I forgot to take a picture of that step because I was so mad about not spraying the pan. Some days are like that.

IMG_5439A Then put the pan in the oven and bake until the cheese is bubbly and brown and the dough is done, 15-20 minutes should do it.

This recipe actually make two pizzas worth so just assemble the second one while the first one is cooking. Pizza, pizza everywhere!

  1. I don't know. Ordering from Market Day looks a heck of a lot easier! You get bonus points for making yet another meal from scratch though!

  2. Love this! Plan to make it soon! and I love your commentaries -- but maybe you could keep the dog turd references away because it kinda kills my appetite. "Fiddlesticks" works and always brings a smile. Even when you're mad it's hard to say fiddlesticks with a straight face :)
