Relatives of the Midwestern Variety

Emma,John,Becky and KateI come from good, Midwestern stock. These are my relatives, although don’t ask me to tell you how we are related. Just know that we are. According to my computer these are “Emma, John, Becky and Kate.”

I love this picture. I have always wanted to be able to do my hair in that “Gibson Girl” look. And I love the secretive smiles the girls have. As if they know something that you don’t.

Why was the picture taken? When? Where? By whom? My head is a whirl.

And the dresses! Love them. Although I would guess that they were a booger on a hot August day.

I really need a dress like that, especially to cover my prodigiously sized bahookie at the moment.

I had Oreos for breakfast.

  1. When my grandma died, we found boxes of old photos like this. Sadly, none of them were marked as to who they were. We know they were relatives but only she knew the names and relation. Still they are fun to look at and like you, I often wonder what the occasion was and what they were thinking. I've also found that they hardly ever smiled in photos. I wonder why.

  2. I agree with Cindy, if the pictures are not annotated they are a mystery. I have pictures like these except the women are wearing home made clothing and eveery one looks much more flushed.

  3. You will find that these old photos have very good "resolution". Use a magnifying glass and you will be surprised at the detail that you can see. Which means, of course, that they scan well for reprints.

I, too, have always admired the Gibson girl hairdos. Wouldn't it be lovely if they came back in style!

  4. I don't think I could take the collars of those dresses....I have never liked anything around my neck.

  5. My mom has so many pictures that she makes up who they are when she can't remember. I guess I"ll probably do that someday too...
I'm hungry for Oreos now... hmmm.
